"Songs I " Oil on canvas.

This is the first of a new series
, marking a new and significant development: the
work is less visually focused  with less shape and less activity. It is simpler, more emotive. The colour is given more space, with one big area of main colour, on an appropriate base, showcasing it's luminosity to the fullest.

The process in this particular piece started with a roughly brushed sap green base. French ultramarine was then overlaid in a big central band – brushed thick / scrubbed thin. Corners top and bottom are extremely important - a colour is drastically affected by it's neighbours. Bottom corner composed of thickly brushed naples yellow – this stands forward from the dark blue. Lines over this of buff titanium, which splattered onto the dark blue giving a unity and comment. Top corner of broken sap green with a phthalo green light lined on top, which maintains a light tone to again stand against the dark blue. Just a little bit of the bright base glow remains at the edge of the colour areas – very effective nominal use of this strong thin colour. Works well and is a particularly pleasing element in the work. The dark blue has then been very strongly lined with a dark and greeny phthalo blue, drawing on the base and the corner hues.

A powerful and successful piece. Works very well alongside the next in the series. See them together .
