"Balance III green earth base".
Oil on canvas.

The green earth base colour is scrubbed with burnt umber in the central band, hence the warmer glow. These are actually the same two colours that have been used on the previous painting (Balance II), but due to the different proportions each has gone down a slightly different colour route.

The apparently blue lines in this one are actually a broken green earth. They are laid on a thickly brushed buff titanium, which has a complex and contemporary putty hue. I love the way the rogue line breaks into the central band.

Below is a heavy and earthy section comprising phthalo green light, raw umber, and then a huge application of green earth giving power and weight but still maintaining a cohesion of palette.

Despite their different eventual directions a strong relationship has remained between this and the previous piece. See them together .
