"Balance II burnt umber & green earth base".
Oil on canvas.
This painting has a good variation of application: thin lines; thick lines; large thickly brushed areas; areas scrubbed thin; even the brushstrokes of the initial ground colours has been kept. This variation imbues it with alot of visual interest, but with the simplicity of composition and controlled pallette it does not look at all fussy.
Cool at the top, warmer below - it is a gentle balance of temperature.
A strong accent is added with the very boldly applied raw umber - the dark tone of which is lifted from that of the very much more delicately applied scrubbed area.
With it's natural, earthy, hues this is an especially comfortable piece. See them together .
